clone Idai would be the deadliest tropical cyclone on record to have hit southern Africa.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said there was no power in Beira and surr
ounding areas, and nearly all communication lines had been destroyed.
”Main roads leading into Beira have been cut off, buildings have been submerged and se
verely damaged, and all business has been shut down,” said the aid agency, adding that “medical acti
vities in Beira hospital, in local health centers, and throughout the community have ceased completely.”
Though the cyclone hit Mozambique on Thursday, the extent of
the damage has taken days to come into focus due in part to the country’s poor infrastructure.
The scale of #CycloneIdai in Beira, Mozambique, is truly heartbreaking. Initial assessments from @ifrc estimate at le
ast 90% of the area is completely destroyed. Read what IFRC aid workers are witnessing in the ar

Some colour views of the #meteor that flew over the North Pacific in December 2018, taken by Japan’s #Himawari satellite.
The meteor is really clear here – bright orange fireball against the blue + white background!
But you likely didn’t know about it until now, because scientists only just noticed it.
That’s because the area where the fireball exploded, over the Bering Sea, is extremely remote.
NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson told the BBC s
uch a powerful meteor event only happens a few times every 100 years. (As a side no
te, “Planetary Defense Officer” is probably as close to a real-life “Avengers” title as you’re gonna get.)
CNN has reached out to NASA for additional comment.
In case you’re not uneasy enough about the reality that flaming extraterr
estrial objects are continuously pelting our fragile planet, they do so with alarming regularity.
NASA keeps track of most of the notable fireballs and bolides (a similar astronomical term) that reach Earth. So far in
2019, there have already been five notable fireball events. Don’t worry, though! Most are super tiny.
And if the big one ever comes along to make dinosaurs of us all, NASA’s Planetary Defense Office has our backs.

The policy, effective from January 2019 to the end of 2023, applies to nine cities in Guangdo

It said the move aimed to encourage the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Consisting of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and the nine cities in
Guangdong, the area covers 56,000 square km. It had a combined population of about 70 million at the end of 2017.

Trump’s incessant appeals for his base are undeniably effective.
One Republican, Sen. Thom Tillis, of North Carolina, made an 11th
hour switch of his vote on the declaration of national emergency, falling into line behind the President.
A top GOP official in North Carolina told CNN’s Jim Acosta that
Tillis was under fierce pressure ahead of a potential primary challenge next year.
The official said, Tillis is “getting hit hard in the state.”
It wasn’t quite a George Clooney or Brad Pitt heist, but police say a brazen robbery attempt ended with gunfire and the suspect hospitalized in Las Vegas.
About 9:45 p.m. local time Friday, an armed man entered a packed Bell

He then fled and tried to steal a vehicle that ha
d just pulled into the valet lot, but he was immediately confronted by four police officers, Splinter said.
